Donna C. Braymer
Interview Questions

1.  How did the idea for Rowdy Raccoon begin?
My husband and our three sons were camping at a state park in Arkansas with friends. It was the first time I had gone camping as an adult, and not knowing any better, I actually did leave a loaf of bread out on the table. The animals had a feast! That gave me the idea of writing a story about a mischievous raccoon.

2.  Why did you write this book?
I feel very strongly about having good books for our children to read. Children are so precious and they grow up so fast. I want to see them have every opportunity to make good choices and to be boys and girls with good character. Our entire society will benefit as they become productive adults.

3.  What are some of the situations Rowdy gets himself into?
In the first story in The Adventures of Rowdy Raccoon, "Rowdy Learns to Share," he steals a loaf of bread and eats so much he feels terrible. Then he puts his best friend, Savannah Squirrel in danger, causing both humorous and scary events to happen.
In the second story in the book, "Rowdy Learns to Laugh," Rowdy falls out of a tree while carrying a bag of trash. When the trash lands on his head his friends can't help laughing. Finally, after several other incidents, Rowdy eventually realizes the difference between laughing at someone and laughing with someone.

4.  How do children and parents respond as they read the Rowdy stories?
Parents tell me their children won't let them stop reading! And when situations happen in the home or at school, the children often make reference to one of the lessons Rowdy learned.

5.  Tell us about your family.
My husband is the pastor of Open Door Baptist Church in Harrison, Arkansas. We survived raising three active sons! They are all married now to wonderful young women. We can't take the credit, but the guys are all in ministry positions and are Godly young men.

6.  What suggestions do you have for frazzled parents?
Begin teaching your children at a very young age the benefits of obedience. Inform them of where they are going, what they will be doing, and what kind of behavior you expect of them. Praise and reward often go alongside discipline when dealing with disobedience. It is sad to hear grandparents say they can't stand to be around their grandchildren because they refuse to mind.

7.  Do you have a background in education? Where did you attend school?
I do not hold a degree in education. However, I have spent many years in the classroom as a volunteer teacher's helper. That got me interested in the Board of Education, and I served as an elected member for fifteen years, and as a director at the state level for the Arkansas School Boards Association. I am also a piano teacher and one of the leaders for our WiseGuys children's program at our church.
I grew up in Tyler, Texas and graduated from Robert E. lee High School. I also received my Bachelors Degree in Missions and Bible from Baptist Bible College, Springfield, MO.

8.  What else do you do besides write, teach piano, and serve alongside in your church your pastor husband?
I am the Business Editor at the Harrison Daily Times, our local newspaper. I enjoy writing positive articles about the businesses in our area.

9.  Do you have a web page and where can our readers get your books?
Actually we have two web pages: DonnaCBraymer.com tells all about me and RowdyRaccoon.com is about Rowdy and a little more geared for children. In fact, children can email Rowdy directly at RowdyRaccoon@aol.com
Rowdy loves to receive mail!

10.  Are there more adventures in Rowdy's future?
Yes. The Rowdy Learns stories are endless. There is one in which Rowdy is influenced by a bad gang of raccoons in the state park. Another in which he hides on a school bus that brings kids to visit the park. He causes all kinds of trouble at school and learns some important lessons. In light of the fact I raised three boys, I have all sorts of stories possibilities!

11.  What are the three main things every child needs to know?
Every child needs to know:
Do you love me?
Are you with me?
Will you keep me?

12.  What is one quick suggestion you can give parents and what do you mean by "Be a C Student?"
Raise your children in a Bible-preaching church. Show them by example that you love the Lord with all your heart. This will help you be the parent they need and give them every opportunity to grow up in a great home and have endless opportunities.
"Be a C Student" means:
Know Christ
Have Character
Be Confident
